NOTES:
Named after the towering bouffant hair-dos worn by the female members of the band, The B-52’s formed in late 1976 from elements of the thriving Athens, Georgia, music scene. Comprised of Keith Strickland (drums, percussion), Ricky Wilson (guitars), Cindy Wilson (vocals, percussion, guitar), Fred Schneider (vocals, organ, keyboard, bass, guitar), the group played its first show on Valentine’s Day, 1977.
The B-52’s became a sensation on the New York City club scene in 1978, thanks to an outrageous stage image which included mini-skirts, go-go boots, toy instruments and music that combined high camp with irresistible rhythms. Late that same year5 they recorded their first6 single, the independently released “Rock Lobster.” The song became a Top 10 hit in Australia and by early 1979, the group had signed to Warner Bros. Records.
The B-52’s self-titled debut album, released in the summer of 1979, was produced by Chris Blackwell. It contained eight B-52’s originals, including such in-concert favorites as “52 Girls,” “Dance This Mess Around,” “Rock Lobster” and “Lava.” The album also highlighted a quirky rendition of the 1965 Petula Clark hit “Downtown.” A sell-out summer tour that ranged from Australia to New York’s Central Park brought The B-52’s gleeful party music to a wider, and wildly enthusiastic, audience.
